It is necessary to make your reservations for the 2013 Annual Conference by March 2 in order to receive discounted room rates.
Put-in-Bay is an extremely popular resort and the hotel that we have contracted to handle our lodging requires a 60-day notice to hold rooms at a negotiated discount rate. After March 2, the rooms revert back to their normal early May rates.
Since is seems like Christmas has just passed and tax time is approaching, some have indicated that their finances will not allow payment for the conference so far in advance.
After discussing some options with our Secretary/Treasurer, we feel that for the good of the organization, yet in fairness to our members, we can offer the option of a partial payment now, with the balance due upon check-in. See the registration application for details.
The advantages of a partial payment option for both the members and organization include:
• Fulfilling the contractually binding 60-day in advance room count for the hotel
• Substantial Room Discounts for all O.W.O. attendees who register by March 2
• The potential to increase the number of O.W.O. Conference participants by spreading out two payments over a 2 month period, March 2 and May 2.
• Reduced financial risk and liability for O.W.O. to the hotel to pay for reserved rooms in the event that a member registers with no deposit, then does not attend.
The 74th Annual Outdoor Writers of Ohio Conference will be an informative, fun, busy event, beginning with optional trips for those who wish to go out for walleyes on Thursday morning and ending with a spring perch trip on Sunday.
In-between, there will be stops at virtually every outdoor-related island activity available, a science cruise aboard OSU/Stone Lab’s research fleet, programs by researchers, stops at Perry’s Monument, South Bass State Park, new venues and the usual contacts with visitor bureau, outdoor sports industry and Ohio Division of Wildlife personnel.
If you think that because you attended the last conference at Put-in-Bay in 2000, you know everything there is to know about the Island already, consider these changes since then:
A butterfly house, Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center, Lake Erie water snake endangered species listing and recovery, Middle Bass Island State Park purchase and development, North Bass Island and other island conservation projects, OSU research projects, Cooke Castle exterior renovations, Stone Lab solar power grid, several large capacity hotels, 3 new waterfront restaurants, a conference center, new fire department/senior center, school gymnasium, a few bald eagle nests, more and newer ferries, kayak rentals, winter airboat service, spring and fall birding events, a go cart track, 100’s of golf carts and more.……
The timing of the 2013 visit was selected to coincide with special events associated with the commemoration of the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie, with special events being coordinated by Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.
A final itinerary will be distributed at check-in, but an outline of the itinerary and activities: (Member activities are abbreviated with the letters “OWO” vs. “Spice” activities)
